As we started winding up the twisties of 129 toward the 11 mile stretch they call the "Dragon", it was disturbing to see just how many emergency
vehicles were parked along the side of the road. Literally every few miles there was an ambulance, a sheriff's cruiser, or both. But, even more
chilling than that was the evidence that they were needed. The scariest thing about riding the Dragon (it only registers afterward) was the number
of skid marks you saw at every major turn. Half a dozen at each, leading right off the road, and more times than not the road just fell away into
a steep dropoff down the side of the mountain. It was fun and exhilirating, but definitely dangerous. There were photographers camped out at the
more menacing turns hoping to catch shots of that "gnarly" wreck.
It was cool to see all the people there for "group" rides and drives. There was a group of "Heritage Softail" riders there. It was cool seeing the
train of about 30 of those big bikes rumbling off up the road from the Motorcycle Resort. But, by far the coolest group we saw there this weekend
(in my opinion) was a group of Porche Carrera owners. I had to slow way down to gawk at them heading the other direction as they squeeled their tires
through the Dragon's turns, a dozen of them or more. Awesome sight.
